Lissodendoryx (Lissodendoryx) firma (Lambe, 1895)
Sponge: Encrusting to 2 - 5 cm thick. Consistency: firm, compressible. Surface: hard, slightly rough. Varies from partly smooth and partly rough to undulated, simulating a a brain coral surface. Oscula: oval to oblong., 1-4 mm in diameter.
Color: Alive: Light tan, gold, yellow, cinnamon brown, buff.
Spicules: Megascleres: (1) Styles (head either smooth or with a few spines): 180 -239-265- 350 um. x 6 -8-9- 11 um. (2) Tylotes - Subtylotes: 170 -223-233- 260 um. x 3 -5-6- 7 um. Microscleres: (1) Arcuate Isochelae: 21 -27-29- 35 um. (2) Sigmas: 30 -49-54 - 64 um.
Skeleton: Ectosome: Dermal membrane under which are thick palisades of Tylotes-Subtylotes, mostly perpendicular to the surface. These may penetrate the surface. Choanosome: Vague tracts of Styles - Subtylostyles. Below, ill-defined reticulation of same spicules. Microscleres throughout.
Distribution: Southern to Northern California.
Depth: Intertidal to deep water.
Note: Easily confused with Forcepia hartmani. See pg. 150.

Diacts are microspined Tornotes - Strongyles.
Sigmas: 43 - 65 μm.
Lissodendoryx sp. 2 [of Lee]
Sponge: Encrusting to 11 mm thick. Consistency: firm. Surface: rugose with numerous interconnecting ridges and deep furrows. Surface superficially smooth but minutely hispid.
Color: Isabella color (Ridgeway).
Spicules: Megascleres: (1)Styles: 227 -257- 292 um. (2)Tornotes- Strongyles with microspined heads: 135 -182- 200 um. Microscleres: (1)Arcuate Isochelae: 20 -29- 37 um. (2) Sigmas: 43 -55- 65 um.
Skeleton: Ectosome: Layer of Strongyles parallel to the surface and just at the surface. Choanosome: Thick multispicular primary tracts with paucispicular to multi-spicular connections to form a rugged reticulation.
Distribution: Southern California. La Jolla Canyon.
Depth: Deep water.
