Phorbas californiana (de Laubenfels, 1932)
Sponge: Thick encrusting to 15 mm, amorphous. Consistency: fragile. Surface: superficially smooth with numerous small low profile tubercles and a few smooth ridges. Oscula: 0.5 - 0.75 mm in diameter.
Color: Preserved: Pale drab.
Spicules: Megascleres: (1) Subtylostyles - Tylostyles: 162 -224-255- 289 um. x 2 -4-6- 7 um.

Skeleton: Ectosome: Fleshy, detachable membrane containing tangential Tylostrongyles and Acanthostyles, the latter often perpendicular to surface with heads exposed. Choanosome: Isolated branched tracts of Tylostrongyles as well as scattered spicules of all kinds.
Distribution: Southern California.
Depth: Intertidal to subtidal.
Note: May be the same as Phorbas hoffmani. Was formerly Myxilla versicolor californiana.
[B]
NO Tylostyles present.
Microscleres are Rhaphides.
(de Laubenfels, 1930)
Sponge: Thin, encrusting to 1- 2 mm thick. Often takes the form of the substrate on which it is found.
